U.S Navy Accepts Delivery of USNS Robert F. Kennedy

The U.S. Navy marked a crucial milestone with the delivery of the latest John Lewis-class replenishment oiler following successful Integrated Sea Trials. These trials assessed and confirmed the ship’s readiness and capabilities against delivery specifications, ensuring it is prepared to serve its strategic role in maritime operations.

“Welcoming another oiler into our fleet expands our replenishment capabilities at sea,” stated John Lighthammer, the program manager of Auxiliary and Special Mission Ships at the Program Executive Office, Ships (PEO Ships). He emphasized this step as vital in provisioning civilian mariners with necessary resources and tools.

The John Lewis-class ships (T-AOs), run by the Military Sealift Command, boast a significant capacity for oil, ample dry cargo space, and aviation capabilities. These ships enhance the Navy’s Combat Logistics Force and are integral to its fuel delivery infrastructure.

In addition to the recent delivery, General Dynamics NASSCO is constructing several other T-AOs, including the USNS Lucy Stone (T-AO 209) and USNS Sojourner Truth (T-AO 210). Planned future ships include the USNS Harriet Tubman (T-AO 213) and USNS Dolores Huerta (T-AO 214) following the Block Buy contract initiation in September 2024, which covers T-AO ships 214 through 221.

PEO Ships remains one of the Department of Defense’s leading acquisition bodies, charged with the design and procurement of destroyers, amphibious vessels, support ships, and special mission vessels.
