CTF 63 Air Logistics: Masters of Aerial Coordination
Operations Specialist 2nd Class Aaron Glenn Santos, from Rizal, Philippines, described the central role played by his team at CTF-63 in facilitating airlifts. Whether transporting passengers, mail, hazardous materials, or essential repair parts, his team ensures smooth coordination and execution of these logistical tasks.
Once a client submits a lift request, Santos and his team draft the necessary flight plans. These plans are then processed through the Defense Attaché Office and local embassies are informed about the flight routes and schedules.
CTF-63 manages logistics support across the European theater with a fleet that includes the C-40 Clipper and C-130 Hercules aircrafts, courtesy of rotational squadrons, alongside the C-26 Metroliner operated by crews stationed at Naval Support Activity, Naples and Naval Air Station Sigonella.
Naval Aircrewman (Operator) 1st Class Samuel Ghinea, based in Fremont, California, noted their busy schedule, which averages three flights daily. This volume often increases when a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier strike group is within the vicinity. Despite managing a rigorous schedule, the team comprises only seven people.
A recent flight featured an unusual duo: Brutus, a military working dog from Sigonella, and his handler, Master-At-Arms 3rd Class Isaiah Koontz from Massillon, Ohio. The U.S. Secret Service directed their deployment to Paris ahead of U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s visit.
Koontz appreciated the convenience and efficiency that military air travel (MILAIR) provided for this mission. The accessible travel arrangements made it easier to attend to Brutus’s needs, ensuring a seamless journey. “MILAIR helps us reach our destination faster with less stress, benefiting both the handler and the dog,” Koontz emphasized.
