Commander, Navy Installations Command Increases Unit Recreation Funds for Shore Commands

The Navy is adjusting its approach to unit recreation funding, a move aimed at better addressing the needs of sailors while considering current economic conditions. Lisa Sexauer, director of CNIC’s Fleet Readiness division, stated that by increasing these funds, commanding officers will have more leeway to enhance sailor welfare through various activities and events.

This funding boost is specifically targeted at Navy Regions, installations, and tenant commands that are stationed on Navy installations for over 30 days. Mobile units can access these funds only during their time on an installation. Shipboard afloat commands will not benefit from this increase, as their recreational finances are governed by different guidelines.

The expanded funds are designated for a variety of uses, such as command-sanctioned events, acquisition of recreational equipment, and activities that promote team-building. Additionally, they may cover emblematic items, awards, and materials needed for ceremonial events. Expenditures must adhere to CNIC Instruction 1710.3 CH-1 to ensure compliance.

To obtain the funds, eligible unit commanders are required to submit a formal request to their respective Navy region or installation MWR program manager. They must also include a roster of all active-duty members at the command. These requests can be made on a quarterly, bi-annual, or annual basis.

The Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), oversees the management and policy directives of U.S. Navy shore installations globally. With ten regions and 70 installations under its purview, CNIC’s workforce exceeds 43,000 employees, all dedicated to maintaining the fleet’s readiness, supporting Navy personnel, and their families.
