Destroyer Squadron 50 Assumes Operation Prosperity Guardian Mission

MANAMA, Bahrain – A significant transition in maritime security leadership took place as Combined Task Force 153 handed over the mantle of Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG) to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 50 on February 1st. This operation is critical in countering unlawful Houthi activities in the Red Sea region.

DESRON 50, a strategic component of the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, inherits the responsibility of ensuring safe navigation and uninterrupted commerce in key maritime routes, including the Southern Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab, and the western Gulf of Aden.

“CMF’s CTF-153 has performed exceptionally in its leadership role for OPG,” remarked Vice Adm. George Wikoff, commander of Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). “The task force’s contributions to regional maritime security remain invaluable, and DESRON 50 will ensure seamless continuity of this mission.”

The operation has seen participation from over 20 nations, contributing vessels, personnel, and expertise since its inception in December 2023. Wikoff applauded the professional conduct of CMF personnel involved in OPG.

Integral to this mission is the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), established in February 2024. It plays an expanding role in CMF as a crucial information source for maritime activities in the region. “Through ongoing partnerships with industry and CMF, JMIC provides critical real-time data, enhancing overall domain awareness,” noted Capt. Lee Stuart, JMIC Director.

Headquartered in Bahrain, the Combined Maritime Forces comprises 46 nations, marking it as the most extensive multinational naval partnership globally. Upholding international maritime laws, it fosters security and prosperity across a vast area of international waters, home to vital sea lanes.
