USS Mount Whitney Sees Leadership Transformation in Command Change
In a ceremonious turnover aboard USS Mount Whitney, Capt. Colin Price assumed command from Capt. Matthew Kiser, marking a new chapter for the U.S. Sixth Fleet flagship. The event was overseen by Vice Adm. J. T. Anderson, who commended Kiser’s leadership and contributions during his tenure.
Highlighting the significance of the role, Vice Adm. Anderson emphasized the ship’s representation of the U.S. Navy in Europe and Africa. “Capt. Kiser established a team that exceeded expectations, participating in key engagements and fortifying alliances,” Anderson noted.
Kiser, a native of Bedford, Texas, took command in April 2023. Under his leadership, the Mount Whitney participated in notable exercises like Baltic Operations (BALTOPS) and Large Scale Exercise (LSE) 23. The ship also played a crucial role in multinational maritime crisis response and contingency planning with Joint Task Force 406.
During the ceremony, Kiser attributed his success to the dedication of Mount Whitney’s crew. “Team 20 has been instrumental, showcasing our unique dual-staff capability and commitment to command and control initiatives with NATO partners,” he remarked.
Capt. Price, a United States Naval Academy graduate, brings a wealth of experience. With a background that includes missions with VFA 137 and humanitarian efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Price pledged to continue Kiser’s legacy. “I am honored to lead this remarkable team and ensure the welfare of our Sailors,” he stated.
The Mount Whitney, homeported in Gaeta, Italy, operates within the U.S. 6th Fleet’s sphere of influence, supporting national security interests across Europe and Africa. As the flagship, it is a critical asset in joint operations, working alongside allied and interagency partners to secure regional stability.
