USS Spruance returns home after five-month deployment to 5th and 7th Fleet

On July 17, 2024, USS Spruance set sail from San Diego as part of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group (ABECSG), navigating towards the strategic waters of the 7th and 5th Fleet operational areas. The mission tested the readiness of the unit’s crew, which exceeded expectations under the command of Cmdr. Thomas “Matt” Adams. The team expertly handled advanced missile and drone threats, showcasing their tactical precision and resilience.

Initially, the ABECSG was deployed to the Indo-Pacific region. Its presence supported regional security and stability, reaffirming the U.S. Navy’s commitment to its allies. A significant highlight was the first U.S.-Italy multi-large deck event (MLDE) held alongside the Italian Navy’s ITS Cavour Carrier Strike Group in August 2024.

The strike group was later redirected to the U.S. Central Command area, tasked with reinforcing military posture in the Middle East. Its mission included deterring regional conflicts, diminishing Houthi capabilities, and ensuring the safety of U.S. forces. The Spruance, among other destroyers, played a crucial defensive role, providing security in vital waterways such as the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

In coordination with U.S. Central Command, Spruance successfully defended against multiple threats, including Iranian-backed Houthi attacks. Despite facing anti-ship ballistic and cruise missiles, the team efficiently neutralized these threats, maintaining the vessel’s integrity and crew safety.

The deployment, led by Cmdr. Adams and executive officer Cmdr. Leigh R. Tate, was a testament to the professionalism and courage of the Spruance crew. Covering 37,200 nautical miles and completing numerous operations, they demonstrated their capabilities in various maritime contexts. Their achievements were recognized with the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Combat Action Ribbon.

The ABECSG, a highly capable composite, continues to represent U.S. naval strength. Featuring the advanced Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., and others from Destroyer Squadron 21, the group embodies a formidable force of more than 6,000 sailors deployed since mid-July 2024.

Integral to the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the U.S. 3rd Fleet plays a crucial role in advancing maritime security across the Indo-Pacific. It provides essential training for operations ranging from combat to humanitarian missions, collaborating with allies to uphold navigation freedoms and regional stability.
