SECNAV Del Toro Names Future Guided Missile Frigate USS Joy Bright Hancock (FFG 69)

NEWPORT, R.I. – In a significant recognition of women’s contributions to the military, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced the naming of a new Constellation-class Guided Missile Frigate, FFG 69, as the USS Joy Bright Hancock. The announcement took place on December 16, during the Women, Peace, and Security Symposium at the U.S. Naval War College.

The USS Joy Bright Hancock is named after a pioneering figure whose naval career began as a Yeoman in World War I. Hancock played a vital role in crafting the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948. This landmark legislation was crucial for women’s integration into the armed forces. This frigate will be the first U.S. Navy vessel to bear her name.

Secretary Del Toro emphasized the importance of acknowledging women in the military. “Captain Joy Bright Hancock was a trailblazer, paving the way for future generations of women. Her dedication exemplifies the courage needed to enhance combat readiness and operational effectiveness,” Del Toro said.

Joy Bright Hancock’s legacy includes a distinguished career starting as a Yeoman First Class during WWI. She progressed through various positions, including serving in the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics and as director of WAVES during WWII. Hancock’s enduring impact was most felt during the enactment of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women regular service in the Navy.

The upcoming USS Joy Bright Hancock will join the ranks as the tenth vessel in the new Constellation-class frigates. This class includes vessels such as the USS Constellation (FFG 62) and USS Congress (FFG 63). The Constellation-class is designed for versatile engagements, capable of performing in diverse naval environments.

This new generation of frigates will bring enhanced mission capabilities, including air, anti-submarine, and electronic warfare. The agility and multi-mission design ensure these ships provide a formidable presence at sea.
