Vice Chief of Naval Operations Visits Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

WASHINGTON (Sep. 4, 2024) – Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro conducted a significant visit to the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) in Suitland, Maryland on September 4th.

The visit allowed Secretary Del Toro to meet with ONI Commanding Officer Rear Adm. Mike Brookes and various uniformed and civilian personnel. It provided an opportunity for him to convey his strategic guidance directly to the ONI workforce.

During his visit, Del Toro received a comprehensive overview of the command’s different analytic centers. These centers deliver unique information warfare capabilities, crucial to the Navy, Department of Defense, and the broader intelligence community.

“The Office of Naval Intelligence enhances the Navy’s abilities across all warfighting domains and enables the United States to integrate new technologies,” stated Del Toro. His visit underscored the importance and value of ONI’s mission and its workforce at the highest levels.

As America’s leading maritime intelligence service, ONI plays a pivotal role in the U.S. Navy’s information warfare community. It provides critical insights into the maritime operating environment and delivers an in-depth understanding of threats to U.S. security.

“Hosting SECNAV Del Toro was an honor. We highlighted ONI’s unique maritime intelligence capabilities and the contributions of our dedicated experts to the safety of our Navy and nation,” said Rear Adm. Brookes.

ONI, established in 1882, is the nation’s longest-serving intelligence agency. Del Toro emphasized, “ONI’s role in keeping us ahead of adversaries is vital. It directly contributes to our naval power and influences how we operate in every domain.”

The Office of Naval Intelligence delivers essential maritime expertise that safeguards national prosperity and security, deters aggression, and equips leaders with informed options. It supports everyone from frontline warfighters to the president.
