SECNAV Del Toro presents Tom Cruise with the Distinguished Public Service Award

LONDON — In a distinguished ceremony today, Hollywood actor Tom Cruise received the prestigious Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service (DPS) Award, recognizing his longstanding support for the U.S. Navy. His contributions to the film industry have heightened public recognition of the Navy’s skilled personnel and the sacrifices these men and women make in service.

Presented by Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, the DPS Award is the highest civilian honor granted by the Navy. Del Toro emphasized Cruise’s impactful role, stating, “His work has inspired generations to serve in our Navy and Marine Corps.”

Cruise’s advocacy for the Navy began in 1986 and has spanned nearly four decades. Through his films, he has been an unwavering supporter of Navy and Marine Corps members and their families. “Top Gun” notably spurred a recruitment surge for Navy pilots in the late ’80s and early ’90s, highlighting his influence.

Expressing gratitude, Cruise remarked, “I’m happy I have been able to be a source of inspiration to many of the sailors who serve today or have served in the past.” He also acknowledged the collaborative nature of his work, crediting his success to the dedication of his cast and crew.

The release of “Top Gun: Maverick” connected with audiences both old and new, further stimulating interest in Navy careers. This cultural impact contributed to Cruise being named the U.S. Navy’s 36th Honorary Naval Aviator, underscoring his ongoing legacy of support.
