Navy Secretary Applauds Excellence, Engages Marines at Miramar and 3rd MAW on War Strategy and Living Standards
At a series of townhall events, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro expressed profound gratitude, describing his role as a privilege. He commended Marines and Sailors for their ongoing sacrifices and underscored essential values for success. “Each and every one of you, regardless of rank, is a leader in the Marine Corps,” Secretary Del Toro told an assembly of Marines and Sailors from the Marine Aircraft Groups 11 and 16, 3rd MAW.
He highlighted the responsibility to look out for one another, emphasizing the need for trust in challenging situations. Engaging directly, Secretary Del Toro tackled questions covering mental health and resilience programs, quality of life initiatives, and future operational readiness.
Del Toro elaborated on warfighting excellence and the importance of alliances—topics crucial to the 3rd MAW’s strategic focus. “It matters,” he emphasized. “What you do matters.” During his visit, he also toured the barracks with senior military leaders, drawing attention to the Barracks 360 Reset Initiative aimed at improving living conditions and readiness.
The initiative targets increased command oversight, reduced maintenance backlog, and enhanced barracks ownership, affecting over 15,000 personnel stationed at MCAS Miramar. At a final townhall, Secretary Del Toro led an impromptu reenlistment ceremony for Cpl. Regis Bayou, acknowledging the dedication of Marines and Sailors through challenge coins.
Accompanied by his wife, Betty, the visit included tours of key facilities, reinforcing the commitment to military families. She remarked on the importance of supporting families to keep service members mission-focused. “We have been really paying attention to our family members,” she said, pleased with progress at the facilities.
The visit underscored key priorities for the Navy and Marine Corps, as Secretary Del Toro closed the session with an inspirational note, “There is no limit to what you can achieve, maybe one day you’ll be standing here as the Secretary of the Navy.”
