SECNAV and Arnold Schwarzenegger Rally Crew Aboard USS Boxer
The San Diego waterfront played host to a distinguished visit as Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro embarked on the USS Boxer, marking an exceptional engagement with Navy sailors and Marines. “We were honored to host the Secretary aboard America’s Golden Gator alongside our dedicated sailors,” expressed Captain Jason Tumlinson, reflecting on the crew’s recent deployment achievements and humanitarian efforts.
Secretary Del Toro, a veteran with 22 years in the Navy, oversees nearly one million personnel globally, including active-duty sailors, Marines, reservists, and civilian staff. His visit underscored the Navy’s appreciation for the crew’s contributions to national defense and regional stability.
More than 500 service members gathered on the flight deck to hear Secretary Del Toro’s gratitude, highlighting the crew’s relentless dedication and their pivotal role during their recent Pacific Fleet deployment. Following these acknowledgments, Secretary Del Toro awarded Arnold Schwarzenegger the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award for his advocacy and influence in accurately portraying the military in media.
“Mr. Schwarzenegger has powerfully advanced the narrative of our military,” noted Secretary Del Toro. “His work promotes a deeper comprehension of military values, including honor and sacrifice.” This prestigious award is given to civilians making substantial and lasting contributions to the Navy or Marine Corps.
Upon receiving the award, Schwarzenegger addressed the crew, emphasizing their essential role in America’s identity. “True heroes lie among you, the military personnel,” he remarked. “America is great because of your bravery and dedication, and as a once-immigrant, I understand the opportunities this nation affords.” His recognition aimed to honor service members who risk their lives daily for the nation.
Praising Schwarzenegger, Secretary Del Toro highlighted his efforts through the University of Southern California’s Schwarzenegger Institute. His initiative bridges the gap between Hollywood and military communities, fostering accurate military portrayals and fostering understanding of military life and sacrifices.
Post-ceremony, Secretary Del Toro and Schwarzenegger mingled with the crew and expressed their personal thanks, underscoring the invaluable service of the men and women on the waterfront. The Boxer’s sailors recently returned from a five-month deployment, bringing experiences from the U.S. 7th and 3rd Fleet areas.
The USS Boxer, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship based in San Diego, with a crew of 1,200 personnel and 1,800 Marines, continues to serve as a pivotal asset in the Navy’s operations since its commissioning in 1995.
