Upcoming USS Thomas G. Kelley (DDG 140) Poised to Join the Fleet
The U.S. Navy celebrated a significant milestone on August 30 with the keel plate signing for its upcoming Arleigh Burke-class Flight III destroyer. The event took place at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works (BIW).
This ceremony highlighted Capt. Thomas G. Kelley, a Medal of Honor recipient for his Vietnam War heroism, after whom the future USS Thomas G. Kelley (DDG 140) is named.
Marc Cote, a senior welder at BIW, welded Capt. Kelley’s signature onto the keel plate, marking a crucial step that will be essential in the forthcoming keel laying ceremony.
“What an honor! I am truly grateful and humbled that Secretary Del Toro chose me to be the namesake of DDG 140. To have the ship built in my backyard makes it more special and is a testament to the work skills of New England men and women. I am so proud of the capability this destroyer will eventually bring to the fleet,” remarked Kelley.
The Flight III destroyers come equipped with the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar. They also feature upgraded electrical power and cooling capacity, significantly enhancing their warfighting capabilities.
The Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships, one of the Department of Defense’s largest acquisition organizations, is tasked with overseeing the development and procurement of various naval vessels, including destroyers, amphibious ships, and support ships.
