Navy Week Sets Sail in Syracuse: August 26-31
In a significant community outreach initiative, various Navy assets are participating in Syracuse Navy Week. Key participants include Sailors from the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard, Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron TWO, and the iconic USS Constitution. Other units such as the Naval Talent Acquisition Group Empire State, Navy Band Northeast, and the U.S. Naval Academy are also involved.
Over 60 Sailors will engage in educational and community events citywide. Highlights include a Navy Week proclamation at City Hall and diverse activities at the New York State Fair and the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology.
Rear Adm. Stephen “Josh” Jackson, Deputy Director at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, leads the initiative. He will participate in various outreach activities, connecting with local leaders from business, civic, educational, and government sectors.
Navy Weeks are spearheaded by the Navy Office of Community Outreach, aiming to inform citizens about the Navy’s role in national security and prosperity. This ongoing program targets regions lacking a significant Navy presence to enhance public understanding and appreciation.
“Sailors are the reason America’s Navy is the most powerful in the world,” said Cmdr. Julie Holland, NAVCO’s director. “We are thrilled to bring your Navy Warfighters to Syracuse. At Navy Weeks, Americans will connect with Sailors who have strong character, competence, and dedication to the mission, continuing a nearly 250-year tradition of decisive power from seabed to cyberspace.”
Throughout the week, Sailors will be involved in community service, including youth engagements at the Mary Nelson Youth Foundation and Henninger High School. They will also volunteer at local organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and the Food Bank of Central New York. Additionally, residents can enjoy free live music performances by Navy Band Northeast at various city venues.
Syracuse Navy Week is one of 15 such events in 2024. These weeklong engagements aim to bring the Navy closer to the communities it protects, impacting over 140 million people annually, which is about half of the U.S. population.
