MSC Far East Brings Vital Support to Philippine Children’s Centers
Approximately 30 civilian mariners from the Military Sealift Command (MSC) collaborated with local organizations in Olongapo, Philippines, to visit two children’s centers on December 8, 2024. Their mission: to engage with the children and provide much-needed donations during this community outreach event.
The mariners traveled from two ships: the USNS Charles Drew (T-AKE 10) and the USNS Rappahannock (T-AO 204). They prioritized their visits to two critical centers: the Olongapo City Social Development Center for Girls and the Niños Pag Asa Orphanage Center. The centers focus on helping abused, orphaned, impoverished, and disabled children and young adults.
Voluntary donations from the ships allowed the mariners to purchase essential supplies, such as rice, hygiene items, and food products, for the centers. “The kids are very happy to receive visitors and gifts,” remarked Araceli Menor, executive director of the Niños Pag Asa Orphanage Center. Her organization has roots going back to 1984, originally started by her and a U.S. Marine Corps spouse to aid underprivileged kids.
The visit included entertainment activities where children exhibited their talents in music and dance. Larry P. Ejan from the Charles Drew expressed the emotional impact of the event, emphasizing the value of quality time spent with the children. “It’s also about the amount of time you can spend with them,” Ejan said.
Hana Linzaga from the Social Development Center stressed the importance of such visits, noting the lack of family support for many children. Regular tours and donations significantly improve the children’s lives.
Lorraine Ninete from the Rappahannock shared her motivations: “I have a soft spot in my heart for them. I see a lot of these children and I want them to know that they are loved.”
MSC Far East executed the event’s planning, while the mariners brought the contributions. According to Lt. Cmdr. Jamil A. Khan, the event served as a humbling experience for the mariners, especially during the holiday season away from their families.
Marine operations by MSC Far East involve supporting the U.S. 7th Fleet, ensuring proper resources are distributed across the Indo-Pacific region for U.S. and coalition forces. The 7th Fleet plays a pivotal role in maintaining a free and open region, engaging routinely with allies and partners.
Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2024, MSC continues to provide critical support to military operations, supported by a diverse and extensive workforce. The outreach activities underscore the cooperation and commitment between the U.S. and Philippines in promoting regional unity and stability.
