LCS Training Facility Becomes SCSTC Mayport: A New Era Begins in Atlantic’s Maritime Training

Mayport, Fla. – The Surface Combat Systems Training Command (SCSTC) Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Training Facility Atlantic has been officially renamed to SCSTC Mayport, effective December 1st. This strategic decision highlights the increasing importance of Mayport, Florida, as a crucial hub for naval training and operations. The renaming aligns with the future ship deployment plans and operational needs in the region.

Commodore Capt. George A. Kessler, Jr., emphasized the significance of this change. He stated, “Over the last several years, this learning site has adapted to changing circumstances. Today, as we target achieving readiness for potential war with China by 2027, we must ensure our warfighters are better trained, more proficient, and more effective at delivering credible combat power.” The name change underscores SCSTC’s vital mission of equipping surface warfighters with essential skills.

SCSTC Mayport is recognized for its comprehensive training offerings to the naval fleet in Mayport. With variations in the number of hulls and crews for LCS-1 variant ships, the command utilizes existing resources to provide quality education, establishing a robust surface combat systems schoolhouse similar to structures in Hampton Roads and San Diego.

Capt. Daniel A. Reiher, commanding officer of SCSTC Mayport, highlighted the facility’s new courses, “In addition to the 33 LCS courses we will continue to offer, SCSTC Mayport will immediately provide Micro-Miniature (2M) Repair courses to the Mayport waterfront.” SCSTC Mayport anticipates further expansion as new ship types arrive, incorporating advanced training systems like the Reconfigurable Combat Information Center Trainer and the Anti-Submarine Warfare Tactical Employment Trainer to accommodate evolving training demands.

These enhancements are part of the Surface Training Advanced Virtual Environment – Combat Systems (STAVE-CS), a program aimed at enriching training capabilities. STAVE-CS has been integral in advancing training technology and resources since its introduction nine years ago. As more STAVE-CS solutions are integrated into SCSTC Mayport, additional high-level courses will be accessible to the naval personnel stationed there.

Capt. Kessler reiterated the importance of readiness, stating, “Our warfighters must be ready to fight, and SCSTC Mayport provides the high-end tactical training needed to ensure warfighting readiness, safeguarding our national security and preserving global maritime freedoms.”
