Future USS Nantucket (LCS 27) Makes a Memorable Visit to Its Namesake Communities

In anticipation of the commissioning ceremony for the USS Nantucket, crew members commemorated their connection with Massachusetts, particularly the city that shares the ship’s name. Scheduled for November 16 in Boston, the occasion signifies more than just a launch, as it fosters ties to the state’s rich maritime legacy, celebrated through thoughtful engagements.

Lt. Cmdr. Mike Lynch, the ship’s Combat Systems Officer, highlighted the meaningful experience of spending Veteran’s Day with local veterans. “Sharing stories and experiences with Boston veterans was a profound experience,” Lynch noted, emphasizing the significance of the personal connections established at the New England Veterans Home.

For Lt. j.g. Meghana Komarraju, USS Nantucket’s Auxiliaries Officer, a trip to the town of Nantucket stood out. Through a guided walking tour and a visit to the Nantucket Whaling Museum, Komarraju found a deeper connection to the town. “The warmth of the community and its historical insights enriched my appreciation for our ship’s namesake,” Komarraju expressed.

Further building on these connections, crew members also contributed to preserving local heritage by volunteering with the United States Lightship Museum. Machinist Mate First Class Devon King described the restoration work on the Nantucket Lightship as a rewarding project that strengthened their bond with Nantucket.

Demonstrating their commitment to community engagement, the USS Nantucket crew offered public ship tours during the week. Distinguished guests included 316th Captain Commanding Maj. Michael Fish, Massachusetts Veterans Services Commissioner Robert Santiago, and Paul Moran, the former Chief of Staff for Veteran’s Services in Massachusetts. The ship also welcomed Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets from local universities, providing a firsthand look at naval operations.

The USS Nantucket holds a storied legacy as the fourth naval vessel to carry the name, harkening back to 1863. The original Passaic-class monitor played a pivotal role in the U.S. Navy’s South Atlantic Blockade during the Civil War, marking a rich historical tradition that continues today.

As LCS 27, the latest incarnation of the USS Nantucket, prepares for service, it promises to be a crucial component of modern naval strategy. The vessel, a fast and flexible combatant, is designed for diverse mission profiles, from near-shore to open-ocean operations, addressing contemporary maritime challenges globally.
