USS COLE RETURNS FROM DEPLOYMENT TO FIFTH AND SIXTH FLEETS

The USS Cole recently returned from a 224-day deployment where it operated across the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Gulf. Its primary mission was to provide deterrence and defense for U.S. allies and partners, showcasing its capabilities in a complex maritime environment.

During its deployment, the USS Cole played a crucial role as an air defense unit within strike group forces located in the Red Sea. The ship’s crew collaborated with allied navies on various missions designed to enhance regional stability, emphasizing the strategic importance of international cooperation.

Cmdr. Matt Faulkenberry, the Commanding Officer of the USS Cole, expressed his admiration for the crew’s performance, stating, “Cole demonstrated professionalism and lethality across all domains.” The statement underscores the ship’s legacy of excellence even during challenging operations.

Notably, the USS Cole was involved in ballistic missile defense operations in the Levant region. On October 1, the vessel fired interceptors in collaboration with the USS Bulkeley, exemplifying precise coordination. In addition, the ship earned a star on its Combat Action Ribbon following engagements in the Red Sea.

The U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet oversees an extensive area of 2.5 million square miles, including the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea, and parts of the Indian Ocean. This strategic expanse encompasses 20 countries and contains critical maritime choke points like the Strait of Hormuz, Suez Canal, and the Strait of Bab al Mandeb near Yemen.

NAVEUR-NAVAF, based in Naples, Italy, directs U.S. naval operations within the U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) and U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM) jurisdictions. The U.S. Sixth Fleet is permanently assigned to NAVEUR-NAVAF and is tasked with executing a wide range of joint and naval operations.
