USS Oak Hill Makes a Majestic Arrival in Limassol, Cyprus
A diplomatic visit is set to unfold in Limassol as leadership from Australia, France, the U.K., and the U.S. prepare for an important engagement at Oak Hill.
The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (24th MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC) is returning to Oak Hill following an intensive two-week training exercise in Cyprus. The exercise emphasized interoperability with Cypriot forces. “Our time in Cyprus has allowed us to strengthen ties with local forces and coordinate with key international partners,” explained Cmdr. Jason Nowell, commanding officer of Oak Hill.
In September, Oak Hill visited Limassol for a 10-day port stop focusing on maintenance and repairs. Now, the vessel’s return allows the crew to immerse themselves once more in Cyprus’s rich culture and history.
“The crew is eager to revisit Limassol,” noted Nowell. “They previously enjoyed the cultural experiences and now have another opportunity to engage with the local community.”
Oak Hill’s operations are part of the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (WSP ARG)-24th MEU (SOC), within the U.S. 6th Fleet. This group works to uphold regional stability and deter potential threats in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The WSP ARG includes the flagship USS Wasp (LHD 1), USS New York (LPD 21), Oak Hill, and the 24th MEU (SOC).
The 24th MEU (SOC) operates as a Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF), with various combat and logistics elements.
