Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti recently conducted a virtual meeting with Chief of the Royal New Zealand Navy, Rear Adm. Garin Golding, on October 31.

The discussion centered on mutual defense and security priorities, emphasizing the importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific. Enhancing naval partnerships through increased interoperability was a significant topic. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to the rules-based international order.

Adm. Franchetti expressed gratitude to Rear Adm. Golding for the Royal New Zealand Navy’s active participation in the 2024 Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC). She lauded New Zealand’s consistent leadership in the Pacific Islands region.

During this year’s RIMPAC exercise, Adm. Franchetti visited the Royal New Zealand ship, HMNZS Aotearoa (A-11). While on board, she thanked the crew, engaged with the ship’s leadership, and observed the joint military activities in person.

Adm. Franchetti also extended her condolences for the loss of HMNZS Manawanui, which sank without any casualties after running aground off Samoa’s coast on October 5.

The partnership between the United States and New Zealand remains robust, with both nations committed to maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific and worldwide.
