Navy Chief Emphasizes Shipyards’ Crucial Contribution to Fleet Readiness on Pacific Northwest Tour
Assistant Secretary of the Navy Anthony Mancinelli recently toured the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) as part of the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP), a long-term project aimed at upgrading the Navy’s four public shipyards. The visit included an inspection of the USS Jimmy Carter, a Seawolf-class submarine currently undergoing maintenance.
During his stay, Mancinelli engaged in discussions with Capt. JD Crinklaw, PSNS & IMF commander, along with other senior officials. Topics ranged from shipyard operations and infrastructure updates to program improvements, technical innovations, and Quality of Service initiatives. PSNS serves as a critical facility, being the sole shipyard on the West Coast capable of servicing Nimitz-class carriers.
“We must continue to build, maintain, and modernize ships, submarines, and aircraft to meet current and future challenges,” stated Mancinelli. “Your work is crucial to national security and helps defend our way of life.”
Mancinelli examined ongoing upgrades at Dry Docks 3, 5, and 6, specifically focusing on seismic enhancements and upcoming developments under SIOP. He described the plan as a groundbreaking investment that reflects the Department of Navy’s resolve in ensuring fleet readiness for future challenges.
SIOP aims to meet nuclear fleet maintenance demands while boosting Navy maintenance capabilities by expanding shipyard capacity and modernizing equipment. These enhancements are designed to streamline efficiency and minimize the time that vessels spend out for maintenance.
The Acting Under Secretary also visited the USS Jimmy Carter, the Navy’s most advanced Seawolf-class attack submarine, notable for its 100-foot hull extension known as the multi-mission platform. This feature allows the submarine to carry cutting-edge technology and improved warfighting capabilities.
Onboard, Mancinelli engaged with the submarine’s leadership, toured its facilities, and shared a meal with Sailors to gain a deeper understanding of its capabilities. “Meeting Sailors who bring our platforms to life is always a source of inspiration,” shared Mancinelli. “The crew of the Jimmy Carter exemplifies innovation and dedication, essential qualities for advancing our Navy’s mission.”
Throughout the visit, Mancinelli emphasized maritime statecraft and emphasized Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro’s key priorities: reinforcing maritime dominance, cultivating a culture of warfighting excellence, and strengthening strategic partnerships.
“The shipyard workers at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard are vital to our fleet’s strength and readiness,” Mancinelli concluded. “Your steadfast dedication ensures our nation’s Navy remains the strongest globally. Thank you for your invaluable contributions to our national security.”
This marks Mancinelli’s inaugural trip to the Pacific Northwest, highlighting the Navy’s dedication to maintaining a fleet prepared for global and strategic challenges.
