U.S. Navy Prepares to Christen the Next USS Harrisburg
The U.S. Navy has scheduled the christening of the future USS Harrisburg (LPD 30) on Saturday, January 11, 2025. The event will take place at 10:00 AM CST at HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
Carlos Del Toro, the Secretary of the Navy, will be present to deliver the ceremonial address, a significant moment in the ship’s early life. Following Navy tradition, two Pennsylvania residents, Alexandra Curry and Jennifer Díaz, will have the honor of christening the ship by breaking a bottle of sparkling wine across its bow. Their personal ties to prominent figures, such as Jim Curry, Mayor of Middletown, PA, and Chris Díaz, Chief of Staff to the Secretary of the Navy, underscore their participation.
Harrisburg’s support to the Navy extends beyond this singular vessel. The city’s involvement in defense logistics and naval supply support is pivotal to national security. Its rich history as an industrial city in the 19th century highlights its transformation from a trading outpost, exemplifying its lasting importance.
This vessel marks the second time Harrisburg has been recognized with an eponymous ship. The San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships, like the Harrisburg, offer the Navy versatile capabilities for missions ranging from warfare to humanitarian relief. They integrate modern technology with enduring resilience, capable of working alongside advanced aircraft and landing craft. Notably, the Harrisburg (LPD 30) represents the first LPD Flight II ship, with plans for additional ships under contract continuing its legacy.
