USNS Kanawha awarded Navy Unit Commendation for efforts while deployed to U.S. Central Command

In a significant recognition of gallantry, the crew of the USNS Kanawha has earned the Navy Unit Commendation (NUC) for their steadfast efforts during a critical deployment to the U.S. Central Command’s operational region. Over a demanding 264-day mission, the team executed 111 at-sea replenishments, supplying over 30 million gallons of fuel and other essential logistics under precarious conditions.

“Despite being caught off guard by the sudden deployment, the crew rose to the occasion,” stated First Officer Anthony Canseco. Their mission involved maintaining critical supply lines amid threats, ensuring U.S. and allied forces received necessary deliveries to sustain operations in a contested environment. Canseco emphasized the crew’s professionalism and adaptability, noting their efforts upheld Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) long-standing tradition of excellence.

The NUC, awarded for heroism in action, is second only to the Presidential Unit Citation. The citation praises the Kanawha crew for their operations against terrorist threats, ensuring global commerce protection, and fostering alliances. Their actions were instrumental in deterring aggression and defending key strategic maritime pathways.

During the deployment, the crew transported critical supplies amounting to 4.7 million gallons of marine-grade oil and over 3,000 cargo pallets, aiding 14 U.S. Navy ships and 12 allied ships from six countries. Canseco highlighted the personal sacrifices made by the crew, who spent extended periods away from loved ones to fulfill their duties.

Further commendation for exemplary service came with specific crew members receiving individual accolades. First Officer Anthony J. Canseco and other crew members were awarded the Navy Civilian Service Commendation Medal for outstanding performance. Meanwhile, multiple crew members, including Ship Bosun Theo Niang and Chief Electrician Randy A. Rosero, were recognized with the Navy Civilian Service Achievement Medal.

Addressing future missions, Canseco advised, “Preparation and adaptability are key,” urging crew members to remain informed and vigilant. He stressed the importance of mental resilience and camaraderie, reminding the crew of their role in sustaining naval operations.

As part of the Military Sealift Command’s Combat Logistics Force, the USNS Kanawha plays a pivotal role in supplying necessary materials to Navy ships, enabling prolonged naval presence and readiness. Their commendations reflect both a tribute to their dedication and a reinforcement of the legacy of the MSC in answering the nation’s call.
