US Navy EOD Participates in Black Sea Exercise Poseidon Alongside New MCM Task Group

The annual Poseidon exercise, a key maritime operation focused on Mine Countermeasures (MCM), has reiterated NATO’s dedication to securing the Black Sea, emphasized Capt. Jeremy Wheat of Task Force 68. “Poseidon showcases our shared commitment to safety and prosperity in this critical region,” he stated.

Led by Bulgaria, Romania, and Türkiye, Poseidon involved intricate MCM activities, diving operations, and floating mine response training utilizing live demolition charges. These defensive operations are crucial in mitigating threats while enhancing interoperability among NATO Allies.

The recent exercise also marked the third activation of the Black Sea MCM Task Group, established earlier this year by Bulgaria, Romania, and Türkiye. Türkiye initially held the lead, demonstrating regional leadership and cooperation.

Nations outside the Black Sea, including the U.S., were invited to observe and contribute insights, facilitating knowledge exchange and enhancing collective defense capabilities. Lt. Chad Keller highlighted Türkiye’s pivotal role, witnessing varied exercises from their flagship.

Keller engaged with Turkish Task Group Commodore, Capt. Yusuf Karagülle, to discuss regional de-mining strategies and potential NATO engagements. These discussions underscored the unique perspective of Black Sea nations in managing maritime security challenges.

The task group, having planned three active periods for 2024, anticipates Bulgaria’s command starting January 2, 2025. Tracking and responding to over 120 reported mines in the Black Sea since March 2022 remain a significant focus, a task intensified due to ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Capt. Wheat highlighted the importance of these exercises: “Our participation in Poseidon and collaboration with Black Sea Allies underscores the critical and life-saving mission of de-mining. Enhancing MCM interoperability is vital amid the increased risks posed by floating mines.”

Commanded from Rota, Spain, Task Force 68 operates under the U.S. Sixth Fleet, which is based in Naples, Italy. The Fleet conducts comprehensive joint naval operations, supporting U.S. interests and security across Europe and Africa with collaborative efforts from allied partners.
