Philippines and U.S. Launch Strategic Maritime Collaboration in South China Sea
SOUTH CHINA SEA – The Armed Forces of the Philippines has partnered with the U.S. Navy for a maritime cooperative activity (MCA) recently conducted in the South China Sea, spanning January 17 to 18, 2025. The operation underscores a shared commitment to bolstering regional and international cooperation aimed at ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
These cooperative activities highlight the enduring partnership between both nations’ militaries. “Professional engagement with allies, partners, and friends in the region allows us to build upon our strong relationships and continue learning from each other,” stated Rear Adm. Michael Wosje, commander of Carrier Strike Group 1 (CSG-1). He emphasized that “The U.S. and the Philippines are ironclad allies,” sharing mutual objectives of secure sea access.
MCAs progress in complexity and interoperability with each iteration, enhancing combined military capabilities. “Bilateral exercises in the region have grown in scale, scope, and complexity. We are proud to partake in operations that maintain regional stability and reinforce deterrence,” said Capt. Matthew Thomas, commanding officer of the USS Carl Vinson.
The activity included several key naval units: U.S. Navy’s Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group, a P-8A aircraft from Commander, Task Force 72, and vessels from the Philippine Navy such as the Gregorio del Pilar-class BRP Andrés Bonifacio and the Jose Rizal-class frigate BRP Antonio Luna.
Carrier Strike Group 1 encompasses the Carl Vinson, Destroyer Squadron one, Carrier Air Wing 2, Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Princeton, and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers USS Sterett and USS William P. Lawrence. Carrier Air Wing 2 operates various aircraft, including F-35C Lightning II and F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.
The operations conducted were in alignment with international law, respecting navigation safety and other states’ rights. The group’s efforts fall within the jurisdiction of the U.S. 7th Fleet, the largest forward-deployed U.S. numbered fleet, known for working with allies to foster a free Indo-Pacific.
