Don Roberts Ignites NNSY Spirit with Poetic Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 16 with a celebration hosted by the African American Employee Resource Group (AA-ERG). The event drew hundreds of employees to honor the civil rights leader’s legacy. Award-winning journalist Don Roberts delivered a speech that emphasized the lasting impact of Dr. King’s work on contemporary society.
Roberts urged the audience to consider their contributions at work and in their communities. “If you don’t show up for work, are you missed?” he asked. Roberts linked this idea to Dr. King’s impactful life, where his talents were used to pursue justice and equality. “Be so good at whatever you do, so that when you’re gone, we miss you,” he articulated, encouraging listeners to use their skills for meaningful change.
Through a personal anecdote, Roberts illustrated how anyone, not just heroes, can make a difference. His own father, Nathaniel Roberts, exemplified this in his life, leaving a legacy through simple acts of kindness and determination. Drawing parallels to Dr. King, Roberts applauded his father’s everyday contributions as a powerful testament to legacy-building.
Roberts’ post-retirement activities, like his work with the Newport News Juvenile Detention Center, highlighted his commitment to influencing positive change. He founded the Chess Nutz Knights Network, where volunteers mentor teens through chess and conversation, showing the young participants the importance of strategic thinking both on and off the board.
Concluding his speech, Roberts encouraged reflection on Dr. King’s life and how it could inspire present actions. He challenged attendees to build a personal legacy that aligns with the principles of justice, compassion, and equality championed by Dr. King.
Roberts received an honorary plaque from the AA-ERG and Shipyard Commander Capt. Jip Mosman for his contributions. Capt. Mosman reinforced the alignment of Navy values with Dr. King’s vision, urging the shipyard community to embrace honor, courage, and commitment in all endeavors.
