ONR and ASNE to Unite for Pioneering Symposium
The Office of Naval Research (ONR), in collaboration with the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE), is set to convene the 2024 Naval Science and Technology (S&T)/Combat Systems/Technology, Systems and Ships Symposium. Scheduled for December 9-12, it will take place at George Mason University’s Van Metre Hall in Arlington, Virginia. This event aims to bring together stakeholders from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, industry, and academia to explore the theme “Naval S&T: From Idea to Maritime Dominance.”
Rear Adm. Kurt Rothenhaus, Chief of Naval Research, noted the significance of their partnership with ASNE, emphasizing the importance of enhancing ONR’s relationships within industry, government, and academia. The symposium will focus on advancing strategies supporting the Chief of Naval Operations’ NAVPLAN, Commandant’s Planning Guidance, and the Naval S&T Strategy.
The opening day, December 9, will feature breakout rooms for engagement with representatives from various ONR sectors, including the Naval Research Laboratory and NavalX. An ONR booth will facilitate networking throughout the event.
Key areas of interest at the symposium include:
1) Naval Science and Technology/Combat Systems Symposium (December 9-10):
- Highlights of ONR-sponsored initiatives aligned with the priorities of Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), and Commandant of the Marine Corps.
- In-depth discussion on combat systems, reviewing capabilities, tactics, and maintenance to ensure readiness.
2) Technology, Systems and Ships (December 11-12):
- Exploration of CNO Adm. Lisa M. Franchetti’s directives emphasizing superior systems, weapons, and platforms to enhance military effectiveness.
Rear Adm. Rothenhaus and Rear Adm. Tom Dickinson are set to deliver a joint keynote address to inaugurate the Naval S&T/Combat Systems Symposium. Other notable speakers include SECNAV Carlos Del Toro, Assistant Secretary for Research, Development and Acquisition Nickolas Guertin, and Vice Adm. Scott Pappano, Principal Military Deputy, ASN RD&A.
The symposium also features ONR-led panels focusing on significant scientific and technological advancements. The first panel, “Naval Power: Science and Technology in Strategic Competition and Rapid Change,” is scheduled for December 10. Another panel, yet to be scheduled, will address enhancing fleet lethality and survivability.
The 2024 symposium exemplifies the SECNAV’s Naval S&T Strategy to enhance collaboration with external entities and accelerate technological advancements for the Navy and Marine Corps.
