Norfolk Naval Shipyard Unites to Honor Military Heroes at Annual Veterans Day Ceremony

PORTSMOUTH, Virginia – In the heart of Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY), veterans comprise about 23% of the workforce. With over 10,000 years of collective military service, these individuals continue to contribute to the defense of the nation, now as civilians.

Every year on November 11, Veterans Day offers a moment for Americans to honor the sacrifices made by military personnel. The holiday, first commemorated as Armistice Day in 1919, marks the end of World War I. This day has since transformed into a broader dedication to all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

NNSY recently hosted the Veterans Day Fall-In for Colors Ceremony on November 7, to show appreciation for veterans across various branches of the military. This event, organized by the NNSY Veterans Employee Readiness Group (VET-ERG), brought together shipyard employees and Sailors to honor their service.

The ceremony featured an invocation and benediction from Chaplain Lt. Chad Goddard of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic. The presentation of the colors included key participation from NNSY personnel, culminating in a performance of “Amazing Grace” by retired Lt. Col. Thomas Metz on the bagpipes.

During the event, Shipyard Commander Capt. Jip Mosman paid tribute to the veterans, acknowledging their past sacrifices and ongoing contributions to national security. He emphasized the unwavering spirit of service that persists in those who have shifted from military duties to civilian roles.

Guest speaker Rear Adm. Jack Kavanaugh (Ret.), a veteran with a 34-year service history in the Navy, shared personal insights. He highlighted how military service instills vital qualities such as leadership and discipline, essential both in the armed forces and civilian sector.

The ceremony concluded with a cake-cutting event, celebrated as a military tradition to honor veterans past and present. A symbolic naval cutlass was used for the ceremony, representing the link between generations who have defended the nation.
