Vice Chief of Naval Operations Visits Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

Two helicopters, each carrying a crew of five, were involved in an incident during routine training exercises. The helicopters were operating in a remote area of the Fallon Range Training Complex. Following the incident, all ten crew members were taken to a nearby hospital.

Medical staff treated the crew members for non-life-threatening injuries. Subsequently, they were released from the hospital. The precise cause of the incident is currently under investigation. Security personnel from NAS Fallon have secured the area at the mishap site.

The helicopters are part of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, specifically assigned to the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 12 (HSC-12). They are presently at NAS Fallon for extensive, integrated training exercises in both real and simulated environments. CVW-5 acts as the Forward-Deployed Naval Forces-Japan (FDNF-J) carrier air wing, known for its reliability and readiness.

Post-training, CVW-5 will continue its role as the FDNF-J air wing. This status will be maintained following an anticipated hull swap with the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73).
