SECNAV Del Toro Names Future Aircraft Carriers CVN 82 and CVN 83

WASHINGTON – Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro has officially named two upcoming aircraft carriers in the Gerald R. Ford-class as the USS William J. Clinton (CVN 82) and the USS George W. Bush (CVN 83).

The USS William J. Clinton will pay tribute to the 42nd President of the United States, who served from 1993 to 2001. Similarly, the USS George W. Bush celebrates the 43rd President’s tenure from 2001 to 2009. Both ships mark the first instances of naval vessels being named in their honor.

Continuing the Navy’s tradition, these carriers are named after significant American presidents, highlighting their role in history. “Presidents Clinton and Bush navigated the nation through challenging times,” Secretary Del Toro remarked. “Their leadership ideals will carry forward through these ships, reinforcing our national defense and commitment to liberty.”

President Clinton led several successful military initiatives without casualty, including Operation Uphold Democracy and Operation Desert Strike. His international diplomacy included key agreements like the Oslo Accords and the expansion of NATO, strengthening global alliances and peace efforts.

President Bush responded decisively to the September 11 attacks, initiating Operation Enduring Freedom and reshaping U.S. security infrastructure. His administration marked significant international policies, including nuclear arms reductions and expanding NATO’s reach.

During a private event in January 2025, the Secretary also announced Ms. Chelsea Clinton, daughter of President Clinton, as the sponsor for the USS William J. Clinton, embodying a lifelong bond with the vessel.

President Bush expressed gratitude for his name being linked to the Navy, reflecting a family tradition of military service. “I honor our Navy personnel, including my father, and ask for divine protection over all who serve aboard,” he stated.

Aircraft carriers remain the core of U.S. naval power, performing diverse missions from sea control to cybersecurity. These ships are pivotal in maintaining military superiority, providing unmatched flexibility and strength in global waters.
