New Combined Transport Terminal at the Port of Valencia Commences Operation

VALÈNCIA, SPAIN — The new combined transport terminal at the Port of València is now operational, facilitating the loading and unloading of lorry semi-trailers between road and railway tracks. This significant development supports the first railway motorway on the Peninsula, enabling lorry trailers to travel from Italy to Madrid via the Valencian port area, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by 16,000 metric tonnes per year.

Key Features and Benefits:

  • Railway Motorway: The new terminal enables the railway motorway, allowing lorries to travel between Madrid and Valencia on board the train, significantly reducing CO2 emissions. The certified calculation of emissions according to the ISO 14064-2 standard shows an 85% reduction of greenhouse gases per semi-trailer on the Valencia-Madrid route.
  • Infrastructure Investment: The global investment for the new terminal is 20 million Euros. The Port Authority of València (PAV) contributed over 3.7 million Euros. The terminal is expected to enable more than 10,000 lorries to board the railway annually.
  • Location and Structure: The terminal operates on the existing track beaches in the East dock of the Port of València, covering approximately 740 meters. Civil works included the foundations of two rails for the gantry crane, essential for loading and unloading semi-trailers from the rail motorway.

Environmental and Operational Impact:

  • CO2 Emissions Reduction: The terminal’s operation is projected to save 16,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
  • Sustainability: The reduction of greenhouse gases per semi-trailer on the Valencia-Madrid route is 85%, making it a significant step towards sustainable transport solutions.

Collaborative Effort:

  • Investment and Development: The project is a collaborative effort involving Valenciaport, Adif, TransItalia, Tramesa, and other partnering companies.
  • Free Competition: The terminal provides necessary infrastructure for operators to freely compete in offering this service, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in cargo transfer between road and rail transport modes.

The launch of the new combined transport terminal marks a pivotal development in the Port of València’s commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. This initiative not only supports the railway motorway but also sets a precedent for future transport infrastructure projects aimed at reducing carbon footprints and promoting greener logistics solutions.
