MSRON 1B Forges Stronger Ties with Dynamic Exercise Bull Shark
International Maritime Exercise ‘Bull Shark’ Fosters Cooperation and Security
Djibouti (Dec. 13, 2024) – A significant joint military exercise, Exercise Bull Shark, was conducted near Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, bringing together maritime forces from the U.S., Djibouti, Spain, and France. Held biannually, this initiative focuses on enhancing crisis response and personnel recovery skills.
Sailors from the Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron (MSRON) 1B took an active role in the operation. “Bull Shark is crucial for cultivating strong alliances with our host and allied nations,” emphasized Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Kayla Gathright from MSRON 1B.
During Bull Shark, MSRON 1B facilitated comprehensive maritime security as multi-national teams honed their skills in personnel recovery. Teams were tasked with locating and evacuating casualties under challenging conditions, simulating hostile environments.
“Our contribution involved both classroom instruction and practical exercises on the water,” Gathright explained. “This hands-on approach transcends language barriers and ensures effective knowledge transfer.”
MSRON 1B collaborated with the Djiboutian Navy and Coast Guard for a sustained three-month training period. This partnership covered various maritime operations including navigation, boarding procedures, and rescue tactics.
“Training alongside our Djiboutian partners fortifies our alliance,” remarked Gathright. The interaction between MSRON 1B and local service members not only strengthens bilateral ties but also underlines a commitment to regional stability and security.
The participation of MSRON units underscores a broader goal to protect the Port of Djibouti while enhancing operational readiness. Such exchanges offer valuable insight and experience critical for missions in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
As a pivotal installation, Camp Lemonnier provides critical support to U.S., allied, and partner forces. By offering world-class assistance to service members and various local commands, it maintains security and furthers U.S. strategic interests in the region.
