Future USNS Thurgood Marshall Begins Its Journey with Keel Laying Ceremony

SAN DIEGO – A pivotal ceremony took place on December 5th at General Dynamics NASSCO, marking the keel laying of the future USNS Thurgood Marshall (T-AO 211), a vessel from the John Lewis-class of Replenishment Oilers. This significant event signifies both a tribute and a functional milestone within the U.S. Navy’s operations.

The ship is named in honor of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Marshall’s tenure on the court was marked by his relentless pursuit of justice, including support for affirmative action, opposition to the death penalty, and advocacy for women’s rights. Before his judicial appointment, he was a formidable civil rights lawyer, winning historic cases such as Brown v. Board of Education, which declared school segregation unconstitutional.

“Thurgood Marshall’s legacy is one of unwavering courage, intellectual brilliance, and an unyielding commitment to justice,” expressed Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro during the ceremony. This ship serves as a vessel of remembrance and commitment to the very principles Marshall stood for, aiming to further enhance equality and justice.

The ceremony featured the symbolic joining of the ship’s modular components. Justice Marshall’s granddaughters, Cecilla L. Marshall and Melonie Tibbs, alongside his granddaughter-in-law, Alissa Kamens Marshall, had the honor of authenticating the keel by engraving their initials into the keel plate.

“USNS Thurgood Marshall honors the legacy of an extraordinary civil and human rights leader who is an example of perseverance to all,” stated John Lighthammer, Program Executive Office, Ships program manager for Auxiliary and Special Mission Ships. This event paves the way for future milestones as the ship progresses towards becoming a vital part of the naval fleet.

The John Lewis-class ships, operated by Military Sealift Command, promise substantial capabilities in fuel and dry cargo transportation, along with aviation readiness. These ships enhance the Navy’s Combat Logistics Force, playing a crucial role in maintaining the Navy’s operational fuel supply chain.
