Comorian and Malagasy Authorities Enhance Port Security Skills through IMO Training in Madagascar
Authorities from Comoros and Madagascar acquired vital skills in port security through a series of International Maritime Organization (IMO) training activities held in Antananarivo, Madagascar, from July 9 to 19. The program included a tabletop exercise, a National Maritime Security Committee (NMSC) workshop, and a regional workshop focusing on the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
During the tabletop exercise and NMSC workshop (July 9-12), 24 participants from various government sectors in Madagascar were trained on handling high-risk situations, such as ship hijackings, drug arrivals, and port facility sabotage. This training aimed to foster multi-agency cooperation and a whole-of-government approach to maritime security risks.
The subsequent regional workshop (July 15-19) focused on the ISPS Code, training participants on conducting self-assessments and audits to ensure compliance. Port Facility Security Officers and Designated Authorities from Comoros and Madagascar participated, learning to plan, conduct audits, and draft reports, promoting a standardized approach to port security in the region.
These activities were part of the EU-funded Port Security Project.
