Damen Shipyards Group

On April 5, Damen Shipyards Group signed a contract with Toyota Tsusho for the delivery of four vessels to the Ministry of Transport Angola. This order is part of a Japanese Government-funded port development project in Namibe, according to Netherlands Maritime Technology. The order includes two ASD Tugs 2813, a Pushy Cat 1004, and a Stan Pilot 1905.

Key Details of the Contract

  • Vessel Delivery: Damen will deliver the vessels in Q1 2025.
  • Vessel Types:
  • Two ASD Tugs 2813
  • One Pushy Cat 1004
  • One Stan Pilot 1905
  • Construction Locations:
  • Pushy Cat 1004: Damen Shipyards Gorinchem, the Netherlands
  • Stan Pilot 1905: Damen Shipyards Antalya, Turkey
  • ASD Tugs 2813: Damen Song Cam Shipyard, Vietnam

Damen’s Proven Approach

Damen’s ability to meet the delivery timeline is facilitated by its practice of building proven, standard vessels in series for stock. Construction of the vessels had already begun at various Damen shipyards prior to receiving the order, ensuring timely delivery.

Toyota Tsusho’s Involvement

Toyota Tsusho, a first-time client for Damen, is a large Japanese trading house with a diverse global portfolio. Known for supporting Toyota Motors’ business activities, Toyota Tsusho is also involved in industrial, commercial, and consumer sectors. The company frequently collaborates with the Japanese Government on international infrastructure projects.

Port Development Project in Namibe

The port development project, initiated in early 2019, is Toyota Tsusho’s first such project in Angola. However, Toyota Tsusho has a long history in the country, exporting its cars to Angola since 1966.

Project Scope and Impact

The project includes the expansion of the Namibe container terminal and the construction of a new terminal. These enhancements will allow larger vessels to call at the port, diversifying the materials it can handle. Anticipated benefits of the project include:

  • Employment Opportunities: Wider employment opportunities in Angola.
  • Import Independence: Full independence in import activities for Angola.
  • Cost Reduction: Reduced costs of freight transportation.
  • Economic Boost: Overall boost to the national economy.

This collaboration between Damen Shipyards Group and Toyota Tsusho represents a significant step in enhancing Angola’s port infrastructure, contributing to economic growth and development in the region.
