VAQ-133 “Wizards” complete historic first Next Generation Jammer Deployment to 5th and 7th Fleet in Time for the Holidays

WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash.—In a significant homecoming, Electronic Attack Squadron 133 (VAQ-133), also known as the “Wizards,” returned to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island on December 14, 2024, after a consequential five-month deployment with the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group (ABECSG) to the Middle East and Eastern Pacific. The timing was perfect, allowing the squadron to reunite with loved ones just in time for the holiday season.

VAQ-133, which includes 153 Sailors, 18 aircrew, and seven EA-18G Growlers, embarked on their journey on July 13, 2024, from Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego. This deployment was groundbreaking as the squadron was the inaugural Navy unit to deploy with the ALQ-249 Next Generation Jammer (NGJ). The Wizards pushed boundaries by developing new tactics and successfully achieving the first NGJ arrested landing, highlighting their role in the future of Airborne Electronic Attack.

Cmdr. Erik Dente, commanding officer of VAQ-133, emphasized the significance of this mission, describing it as a testament to the advanced capabilities of the NGJ and the essential contributions of the Growler community to modern warfare. He expressed immense pride in the unit’s unwavering dedication and the support they received from families and friends during their deployment.

The deployment saw the Wizards operate primarily within the U.S. 7th Fleet, executing crucial training missions supporting U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. They participated in a Multi-Large Deck Exercise (MLDE) alongside the Italian Navy’s ITS Cavour Carrier Strike Group and carried out operations in the South China Sea to reinforce a free and open Indo-Pacific environment.

A shift in responsibilities saw the strike group entering the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area to enhance U.S. military presence in the Middle East and deter regional escalations. The Wizards played a pivotal role in dual-carrier operations aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), conducting critical combat missions to safeguard U.S. forces and degrading Iranian-backed Houthi weapons storage capabilities.

Command Master Chief Frederick Tuiel reflected on the deployment’s impact, noting that, although it lacked frequent port visits, it was rich with valuable combat experiences that the sailors would share long into the future. The safe return of the squadron added a layer of success to their accomplishments.

Recognition for their efforts came in the form of the Commander Electronic Attack Wing Pacific (CVWP) Golden Wrench Award, highlighting the squadron’s commitment to maintaining high standards of operational excellence. Their maintenance team ensured 100% mission readiness, enabling the successful fulfillment of their assigned operations.

Beyond operational achievements, the deployment also included cultural exchanges with port visits to Guam in August and Kuala Lumpur in November, offering sailors moments to rejuvenate and immerse themselves in diverse cultures while reinforcing ties with U.S. partner nations.

Returning with notable experiences and accomplishments, the team eagerly anticipates celebrating their success and continuing their spirit embodied in the squadron’s motto: “Push it up!” ABECSG’s impressive track record over its deployment period included over 11,600 flight hours, derived from 5,500 sorties and more than 4,400 fixed-wing aircraft launches and arrestments.

Carrier Air Wing Nine (CVW 9) comprises nine squadrons equipped with aircraft like the F-35C Lightning II, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, and others, enhancing advanced naval air power projection capabilities. Meanwhile, ABECSG includes the flagship USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and associated units, further supporting global maritime security operations.
