The USS San Diego has become the third U.S. Navy vessel to dock at Ishigaki, marking another chapter in the resilient U.S.-Japan alliance. This alliance has been a pivotal force for regional peace and security for nearly 75 years.

During a ceremony on board, Captain Timothy Carter, the commanding officer, expressed his gratitude toward the Ishigaki community. He thanked organizations such as the Yaeyama Defense Association, Ishigaki Port Authority, and Japan Coast Guard for facilitating the ship’s secure mooring.

“It is truly an honor to be here today representing the United States Navy,” Carter stated. “This visit stands as a testament to the deep, enduring friendship we share with Japan. Our presence underscores the strength and commitment of the U.S.-Japan alliance, a cornerstone of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”

USS San Diego operates throughout the Indo-Pacific, focusing on enhancing partner interoperability and readiness for various missions, whether operational or humanitarian.

“Our military-to-military relationships have never been stronger,” Carter added. “We look forward to engaging with the local community and deepening our understanding of each other’s cultures. Our partnership remains vital today and will be crucial in the future.”

While docked in Ishigaki, the crew will interact with local residents, explore the island’s rich history, and appreciate its unique culture and cuisine. This visit cements the strong bonds between the United States and Japan.

San Diego is a vital component of the America Amphibious Ready Group and is forward-deployed under the U.S. 7th Fleet to bolster partnerships and maintain peace in the Indo-Pacific.

The U.S. 7th Fleet forms the largest forward-deployed numbered fleet of the U.S. Navy. It routinely collaborates with allies and partners to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
