USS Ronald Reagan holds change of command

San Diego – Capt. Dale Gregory Assumes Command of USS Ronald Reagan

In a significant naval ceremony held in San Diego, Capt. Dale Gregory took command of USS Ronald Reagan from Capt. Cardone. Rear Adm. Gregory Newkirk, of Carrier Strike Group 5/Task Force 70, led the proceedings. Among the distinguished attendees was Vice Adm. Daniel Cheever, who commands the Naval Air Forces and the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

The USS Ronald Reagan recently transitioned its homeport from Japan to Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton, Washington, completing nine years of service in Japan. Capt. Cardone expressed his gratitude to the Reagan sailors, commending their dedication and vital role in global security. “To the Reagan Sailors, they are the reason I am still doing this after 29 years,” he stated, emphasizing the significance of their service.

Under Cardone’s leadership, from October 2022 through October 2024, the USS Ronald Reagan distinguished itself by earning the Navy’s battle “E” and Navy Retention Excellence awards. The ship participated in international naval exercises, such as Talisman Saber 2023 and Valiant Shield 2024, enhancing U.S. relationships in the Indo-Pacific. “The presence of any carrier, in this case, Ronald Reagan, made anyone think twice before crossing any line,” remarked Rear Adm. Newkirk when speaking of the strategic impact under Cardone’s command.

At the ceremony, Cardone was awarded the Legion of Merit gold star for his exemplary service. Rear Adm. Newkirk praised his leadership and impact, noting, “When the United States needed to reassure an ally or partner, we would send this magnificent warship with Daryle on the bridge at the captain’s chair.”

Taking over command, Capt. Gregory, previously of USS Blue Ridge and USS Abraham Lincoln leadership fame, outlined future goals. Citing directives from the Chief of Naval Operations, Gregory stressed the importance of modernization and preparedness for combat readiness by 2027. A 1997 United States Naval Academy graduate, Gregory brings extensive experience with over 2,500 flight hours in the F/A-18 aircraft.

USS Ronald Reagan continues to embody its motto, “Peace through Strength,” providing a combat-ready force for the United States as it supports alliances and maritime interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
