USS New York: Dive Into History with the Floating Maritime Museum
SOUDA BAY, Greece – USS New York (LPD 21), the fifth U.S. Navy ship named after the state of New York, is currently navigating high-density, multi-threat environments. Designed for versatility, the vessel can transport and land Marines, equipment, and supplies. Its multi-mission capabilities allow operations ranging from ship-to-shore to air missions.
Constructed as a living memorial, USS New York stands alongside USS Arlington (LPD 24) and USS Somerset (LPD 25) in honoring the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In a symbolic gesture, 7.5 tons of steel from Ground Zero were forged into the bow stem of USS New York, creating a tangible connection to the 2,977 victims.
Captain Benjamin W. Oakes, commanding officer of the ship, emphasizes the unique relationship USS New York holds with New Yorkers, first responders, survivors, and victims’ families. “The ship’s legacy inspires each crew to reach their highest level of performance,” Oakes stated.
Lt. Jason Moore and Lt. Camea Baksh provide spiritual support aboard, maintaining a tradition of reading a short epitaph for a 9/11 victim each evening. These memorials bring to life the biographical details and personal stories of the victims, fostering a deep sense of purpose among the crew.
To mark the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, the ship’s Damage Control “Flying Squad” and Chief selectees will lead a ramp “climb” walk, symbolizing the 110 flights of stairs ascended by New York City firefighters during the World Trade Center rescue efforts. A new mural will also be unveiled to commemorate the lives lost.
“First responders on 9/11 charged towards danger,” remarked Oakes. “This ship, much like those brave individuals, is ready to confront any threat head-on. The crew embodies the resilience and determination of our nation’s heroes and those who have defended democracy for over 250 years.”
USS New York plays a pivotal role in the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa (NAVEUR-NAVAF) area, supporting U.S., Allied, and partner interests in promoting regional stability and deterring aggression. The deployment began on May 22, 2024, from Norfolk, Virginia.
The Wasp Amphibious Ready Group, which includes USS New York, USS Wasp (LHD 1), and USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), along with the 24th MEU SOC, enhances the operational capability of U.S. 6th Fleet in the Eastern Mediterranean.
