The USS Green Bay Arrives in San Diego after a Decade in Japan

The USS Green Bay is making waves with its return to San Diego, after years serving as a crucial element of the U.S. Seventh Fleet based in Sasebo, Japan. “We are super proud of our reputation as the most ready well deck in the area of operations,” remarked Capt. Aaron DeMyer, underlining the vessel’s legacy as it transitions to its new home port.

A vital component of the America Amphibious Ready Group, the Green Bay lays claim to notable achievements. With a 400-strong crew and the capacity to transport 700 Marines, its mission transcends mere military might; it extends to humanitarian efforts, fortifying its standing as a versatile and reliable asset.

Electronics Technician 1st Class Blake Cross shared poignant reflections on leaving the Seventh Fleet. “The team has been worked hard… I’m overjoyed to be heading home to see my wife and kids after a year away,” he revealed, echoing the sentiments of many on board who have remained steadfast during their service in distant waters.

Throughout its tenure, the Green Bay partook in a multitude of operations across the Indo-Pacific, enhancing collaborations with global allies. These included Exercise Talisman Sabre in Australia, Exercise Keen Sword with Japan, and Exercise Cobra Gold in Thailand, among others. Each endeavor bolstered tactical readiness while forging strong international ties.

Operations Specialist 2nd Class Juana Cerriteno expressed heartfelt gratitude toward her comrades. “The Green Bay crew became my family while I was away from my own,” she said, emphasizing the unity developed through shared challenges and successes. Returning to the U.S. is a bittersweet transition for those who’ve formed these deep bonds.

Commissioned on January 24, 2009, the Green Bay’s legacy is reflective of its namesake in Wisconsin. Designed for amphibious operations, it remains pivotal in supporting national defense and theater security cooperation, a testament to its enduring importance both at home and abroad.
