USS Beloit (LCS 29) Sets Sail: Commissioning Marks a New Era of Freedom

The USS Beloit, the newest Freedom-class littoral combat ship, was officially commissioned this week, marking a significant milestone for Wisconsin. The ship is the first to be named after the city of Beloit, which has long been integral to the US shipbuilding industry. U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin praised Wisconsin’s manufacturing prowess, highlighting the state’s historic contribution to national defense.

The commissioning ceremony, attended by key figures including Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. James Kilby, underscored the strategic importance of the USS Beloit. Kilby emphasized the ship’s role in bolstering naval operations and deterrence strategies, as well as its crew’s readiness and advanced capabilities.

The crew has completed an impressive array of certifications, underscoring their proficiency and readiness. These achievements reflect the dedication of both the ship’s crew and its builders. Ali Ruwaih of Lockheed Martin acknowledged the remarkable efforts of their workforce in delivering a ship equipped for modern naval challenges.

Veterans from various conflicts attended the ceremony, their presence a poignant reminder of the legacy and responsibility inherited by the USS Beloit’s crew. U.S. Representative Gwen Moore celebrated the ship’s connection to Wisconsin, especially highlighting Beloit’s contributions to the Navy.

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Marcia M. Anderson played a key role in bringing the ship “to life,” reinforcing the notion of the USS Beloit as a symbol of American industry and spirit. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro noted the ship’s embodiment of national independence and security values.

Adm. Gene J. Kissinger, among other dignitaries, expressed pride in the collaboration between Beloit’s community and the Navy. The USS Beloit is equipped with state-of-the-art weapon systems, enhancing its offensive and defensive capabilities. Its role will be pivotal in future naval operations.
