Members of Mobile Diving and Salvage Company 3-8 and contractors conduct salvage operations for an EA-18G Growler in San Diego Bay, Feb. 18, 2025.

Efforts to recover wreckage from a recent incident in the San Diego Bay have seen considerable achievements, as Navy Divers, Sailors, and associated partners have recovered over 16,000 pounds of debris. The operation, which covers a 13,000-square-foot area, follows an estimated timeline of two weeks set from February 16, and is progressing according to plan.

Vice Adm. John Wade, commander of the U.S. 3rd Fleet, emphasized the approach towards a thorough recovery that prioritizes the safety of all stakeholders, including local residents and service members. “Our Navy Divers and the entire supporting team are displaying exceptional dedication.” He further expressed gratitude for how the local San Diego community has shown patience and understanding as the Navy aims to reclaim the wreckage, control ecological impacts, and bring back normal marine activities effectively and safely.

Due to the ongoing operations, civilian boats are temporarily restricted from passing through the southwestern part of Shelter Island basin. The Coast Guard has established a safety zone in the vicinity of Naval Base Point Loma and Shelter Island to ensure the protection of personnel and the environment. Unauthorized entry into this area is not allowed unless sanctioned by the Captain of the Port, Sector San Diego.

The recovery operations have led to the deployment of heavy machinery at the Shelter Island harbor entrance. Local citizens are advised to maintain a safe distance from recovery gear, such as floating cranes and barges, to avoid hindering salvage efforts. Debris might drift ashore away from the original site; public interactions with such materials are strongly discouraged. Individuals spotting debris can report it via email at nbc_debris@us.navy.mil.

The Navy has marshaled additional resources from various commands including Navy Region Southwest and Naval Sea Systems Command, among others, to execute a secure and systematic operation. The Commander, Naval Air Forces will persist in leading an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with details being meticulously reviewed.

Regular updates on the recovery efforts will be relayed as they arise. Visual documentation of the ongoing recovery can be accessed through the links below:
