U.S. Naval Forces Korea Awarded ROK Presidential Unit Citation

SEOUL, South Korea — In a significant display of international military cooperation, Republic of Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol has honored the U.S. Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) with the prestigious Presidential Unit Citation. This accolade, awarded during Seoul’s 76th Annual ROK Armed Forces Day Ceremony on October 1, was presented to CNFK Rear Admiral Neil Koprowski.

The citation represents the highest recognition the ROK president can confer upon a military unit. It commends the CNFK’s exceptional contributions to the defense of South Korea. Over the past year, CNFK has been actively involved in facilitating multiple strategic port visits in Busan and Jeju, notably welcoming three carrier strike groups, amphibious ready groups, and significant submarine deployments like the USS Kentucky and the USS Vermont. Moreover, CNFK has played a crucial role in fostering trilateral naval engagements with the Republic of Korea Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Expressing his gratitude, Rear Adm. Koprowski stated, “We are incredibly honored by President Yoon’s personal recognition on behalf of CNFK. This award is a testament to the ironclad commitment to the ROK-U.S. alliance and a true reflection of the work being done every day by ROK and U.S. Sailors.”

This marks the fourth occasion since 1950 that a U.S. Navy command has been awarded the ROK Presidential Unit Citation. Previous honorees include CNFK in 2017 and U.S. Navy Task Forces during the Korean War.

Situated at Busan Naval Base, CNFK serves as the U.S. Navy’s strategic representative in South Korea. It provides leadership and expertise to improve naval cooperation and strengthen joint maritime operations, reinforcing security and stability in the region.
