SUBASE Unveils Pioneering Micro-grid with Ceremonial Ribbon Cutting

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, and U.S. Representative Joe Courtney joined Navy dignitaries in celebrating a significant development at the Naval Submarine Base New London, commonly known as SUBASE. The event, which took place near the base’s Power Plant, highlighted the successful installation of a groundbreaking micro-grid system.

Captain Kenneth M. Curtin Jr., Commanding Officer of SUBASE, emphasized the importance of energy self-reliance. “In the Navy, October is Energy Action Month, and our new micro-grid is a ‘game-changer,’” Curtin stated. This innovation not only underpins the base’s mission-critical systems but also enhances energy security by allowing seamless operational continuity during power interruptions.

This energy project involves collaboration with the State of Connecticut, CMEEC, FuelCell Energy, and Groton Utilities, among others. It represents over $235 million in investments aimed at enhancing the base’s energy resiliency. Governor Lamont commented on the significance of this advancement. “This project exemplifies resilience. No matter the threat, our Navy base will remain operational,” he said.

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Meredith Berger acknowledged the joint efforts of state and local partners in realizing the micro-grid system. “We are strengthening maritime dominance, people, and partnerships,” she noted. The initiative aligns with the Navy’s broader goals, as articulated by Navy leadership.

Rear Admiral Carl Lahti, instrumental in the project’s conceptual phase, showcased initial plans dating back nearly a decade. “From an idea to a fully realized system, it’s a testament to sustained effort,” Lahti remarked. The micro-grid will ultimately benefit the Navy’s broader operations through significant energy savings, redirecting funds to enhance fleet capabilities.

The installed system features a Fuel Cell Park providing 7.4MW of on-site power, supplemented by NORESCO’s 10.75MW Combined Heat & Power setup. Cyber-secure controls and smart energy management ensure direct responsiveness to base needs. “With forthcoming DOD grants, our partners can further refine SUBASE’s utility frameworks,” concluded Curtin, signaling a promising future for the base’s energy strategy.
