Pacific Fleet Submarine Force Commander Joins Submarine Institute of Australia Conference Panel

At the recent conference themed “Australian Submarines – Cornerstone of Deterrence,” key discussions centered on the strategic shift in Australia’s naval capabilities. The event spotlighted the Royal Australian Navy’s plans to transition from Collins-class diesel-electric submarines to nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS agreement. This change is seen as a significant step in bolstering maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Commander Seif emphasized the deterrent power of conventionally armed SSNs. He highlighted their ability to traverse vast distances quickly and operate undetected for extended periods, maintaining a strategic presence and readiness. “Our speed and stealth ensure we can choose the time and place of our engagement,” Seif noted.

The gathering featured prominent figures such as Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, U.S. Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy, and Vice Adm. Mark Hammond of the Royal Australian Navy. Discussions covered a broad spectrum, including nuclear workforce development, artificial intelligence advancements, and strengthening supply chain infrastructure.

Seif commended the longstanding partnership between Australian, U.K., and U.S. submarine forces. He stressed the increasing importance of the undersea domain in global maritime strategy. “With AUKUS capabilities and future Australian SSNs, we will enhance national defense and deter potential threats,” he asserted.

The U.S. Pacific Fleet Submarine Force plays a pivotal role globally, delivering capabilities in strategic deterrence and anti-submarine warfare, among others.
