The integration of the F-35C fighter jet into the carrier strike group marks a significant enhancement in U.S. military capabilities. This advanced aircraft bolsters national security by seamlessly collaborating with other carrier air wing units.

Commander Nathan Staples, the VFA-86 Commanding Officer, expressed immense pride in the team’s accomplishments. “Our team has excelled since the transition began in February 2023,” he said, praising their hard work and hinting at future goals within the Lightning II community.

The transformation from flying the F/A-18E Super Hornet, an aircraft used for 36 years, started in September 2023. Almost 200 personnel undertook training at Eglin Air Force Base and NAS Lemoore. Nine pilots completed their flight training syllabus with VFA-125, the Navy’s F-35C Fleet Replacement Squadron. They simultaneously took part in tactical training with Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center and TOPGUN.

The squadron reached several milestones, including perfect scores in critical inspections and evaluations. In June 2024, VFA-86 secured Interim Safe for Flight certification. A month later, they completed their first embarked operations aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68), achieving Full Safe for Flight certification.

“Our success is due to proactive management, engaged leadership, and a can-do attitude,” stated AFCM Rich Brickey, VFA-86 Maintenance Master Chief. His praise focused on the sailors’ performance, emphasizing their readiness and dedication.

Formed in 1951, VFA-86 has a rich history, having flown nine different aircraft and contributed to combat operations in regions such as Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Now, as the Navy’s latest F-35C squadron, the Sidewinders uphold their steadfast motto: “When diplomacy fails… 86 ’em!”
