Navy Week Sets Sail for Colorado Springs Adventure
Colorado Springs Navy Week has commenced, marking a significant effort to highlight the Navy’s role and importance to the community, state, and nation.
Over 50 Sailors are set to engage in educational and community events throughout Colorado Springs. Notable Navy organizations involved include Navy Band Southwest, USS Constitution, and Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. Additionally, units like Navy Talent Acquisition Group Rocky Mountain and the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) will participate.
Vice Adm. John Fuller, Naval Inspector General, and a seasoned naval officer, will be leading many of the community interactions throughout the week. His extensive background includes commissions from the U.S. Naval Academy and advanced degrees in Management and National Security. This week, Fuller will engage with local organizations, business leaders, and government officials.
Navy Weeks, spearheaded by the Navy Office of Community Outreach, aim to educate Americans on the Navy’s crucial role in national security. Since its inception in 2005, the program has been the Navy’s primary outreach effort in regions with minimal Navy presence, aiming to demonstrate its relevance to local communities like Colorado Springs.
Cmdr. Julie Holland, NAVCO’s director, stated, “Sailors represent the core of America’s power at sea. We’re excited to bring our Navy Warfighters to Colorado Springs. These engagements allow Americans to connect with our dedicated and competent Sailors, who uphold a 250-year tradition of excellence from seabed to cyberspace.”
Throughout the week, Sailors will participate in various activities, including school visits, volunteering at Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, and appearances at the Space Discovery Center and US Olympic and Paralympic Museum. The community can also enjoy free performances by Navy Band Southwest at different venues.
Colorado Springs Navy Week, one of 15 Navy Weeks in 2024, focuses on bridging the Navy to the general population in meaningful ways. The program reaches over 130 million people annually, nearly half of the U.S. population.
