Chief of Naval Operations Visits NSWC Crane, Purdue University

Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Lisa Franchetti, recently embarked on a strategic visit to Indiana, making pivotal stops at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division and Purdue University on February 10. This visit was geared towards engaging with both military and academic communities to support her Navigation Plan aimed at strengthening America’s Warfighting Navy.

Franchetti utilized this opportunity to align current efforts with the Navy’s objectives under the Navigation Plan, including integrating cutting-edge technology such as robotic and autonomous systems, which are critical to retaining a strategic advantage. She emphasized the necessity of modern infrastructure and the importance of talent retention within the Navy’s operational framework.

“The prowess of our Navy is unmatched, owing much to the advanced technology and the brilliant minds behind its operation,” Franchetti stated, highlighting NSWC Crane’s longstanding contribution to naval excellence over the past 80 years. Her visit underscored the center’s role in delivering essential warfighting capabilities essential for national defense.

During her time at NSWC Crane, Franchetti commended the exceptional performance of Sailors and civilians. She paid visits to the Electromagnetic Warfare Center and was briefed on critical programs including those involving ballistic missile technology and hypersonics, reflecting an investment in microelectronics and other advanced technological sectors.

The center’s partnership with over 40 schools in the region underscored its commitment to STEM education, benefitting over 10,000 students annually. Franchetti personally engaged with elementary school students, sharing insights about the Navy’s diverse opportunities, from naval operations to global defense alliances.

At Purdue University, Franchetti’s focus shifted towards collaboration in advanced technological research. Engaging with Purdue leadership, including President Dr. Mung Chiang, she explored labs dedicated to hypersonics and additive manufacturing, critical areas for the Department of Defense.

“Our partnership with Purdue in developing innovative battlefield solutions is vital,” noted Franchetti. She underscored initiatives in hypersonics and microelectronics as pivotal to the nation’s defense strategy, directly supporting her priorities for enhancing the Navy’s capabilities and readiness.

The engagement at Purdue also included a meeting with the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps, comprising 102 midshipmen. Franchetti applauded their dedication to service, highlighting the importance of their contributions in maintaining global maritime security, from the Red Sea to the Indo-Pacific.

NSWC Crane has a rich legacy in advancing solutions for national security, particularly in electromagnetic and expeditionary warfare and strategic missions, serving as a critical asset to America’s defense infrastructure.
