Introducing the National Call to Maritime Service: New Website Launch

During a joint Navy Week Proclamation with Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon and Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, Hon. Parker highlighted diverse opportunities within the Department of the Navy (DON). In uniform or civilian life, Parker urged the audience to explore how they could engage in service.

Parker emphasized, “Service to country looks different for everyone—it may be through uniformed service, public service, or volunteering in your community. As a life path, it carries profound personal and national significance. We need every generation to understand the crucial role service plays in our nation’s fabric. We’re encouraging the next generation to contribute to building our maritime defense and national security.”

In May 2024, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro issued the National Call to Maritime Service (NCTMS) to highlight the value of serving the country. The initiative targets youth, educators, veterans, leaders, and citizens who cherish freedom to contemplate how they might contribute. It encourages exploring varied career paths within the DON.

The NCTMS website serves as a portal for individuals to satisfy their curiosity about service. It offers insights into different military and civilian roles supporting maritime service, guiding users to resources where they can learn more about opportunities available with the Navy and Marine Corps.

“We’re grateful to have Secretary Parker here to kick off Syracuse Navy Week and announce the NCTMS,” said Mayor Walsh. “Syracuse’s citizens are known for their hard-working, service-oriented nature. This makes our city a perfect setting for this announcement, and we’re ready to answer the call.”

The Navy Week program has been a key outreach initiative, engaging over 95 U.S. cities with more than 300 Navy Weeks. The program’s mission is to inform Americans about the global and constant deployment of their Navy, explaining why a robust Navy is vital to safeguarding the American way of life.
