San Francisco Fleet Week 2024 Combined Urban Search and Rescue Training

SAN FRANCISCO — In a robust display of cooperation and preparedness, nearly 50 Sailors and Marines took part in urban search and rescue training with the San Francisco Fire Department during San Francisco Fleet Week 2024 on October 9.

The exercise took place on Treasure Island, a historic site that once housed Naval Station Treasure Island from 1942 until its closure in 1997. Today, the San Francisco Fire Department’s Training Facility is stationed there, providing an ideal location for such joint exercises.

Doug Johnson, a firefighter and instructor for the Northern California Rescue Training team, emphasized the vital nature of these joint efforts. “In the event of a natural disaster, having military service members with foundational skills can streamline operations significantly,” explained Johnson. “Relying on such trained personnel as a single resource makes it easier for our team to delegate responsibilities efficiently.”

Attendees highlighted safety, oversight, and the ability to conduct operations methodically as crucial learning points. U.S. Navy Lt.j.g. Henry Gao, serving aboard the USS Somerset, reflected on the comprehensive nature of the training. “These sessions are engaging, but understanding the safety protocols and potential hazards is paramount,” Gao remarked.

U.S. Marine Corps SSgt. Talon Wolfe expressed enthusiasm for the community engagement aspect. “Working within the community was incredibly rewarding,” Wolfe stated. “The training expanded our belief in our capabilities, evidenced by our team’s success in lifting a 6,000-pound concrete slab together.”

Sharing his insights, Deputy Chief of Operations for the SFFD, Darius Luttropp, praised the collaborative spirit observed during Fleet Week. “These exercises highlight the seamless integration between military and civilian services,” said Luttropp. “The shared values of motivation and efficiency are evident in both organizations.”

Celebrated annually, San Francisco Fleet Week now marks its 43rd year and offers the Bay Area’s public an opportunity to engage with maritime service members and appreciate their expertise up close. Approximately 2,500 Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen will demonstrate their capabilities while engaging with the local community through various events and activities.
