INDOPACOM Chief Explores Strategic and Technological Frontiers at NPS
Renowned for its dedication to defense innovation, the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) recently hosted Admiral Samuel Paparo, overseeing U.S. military operations in the Indo-Pacific. Paparo’s visit underscored the critical role of NPS in addressing the region’s strategic challenges.
The day commenced with Paparo engaging in research updates from both faculty and students. These sessions not only addressed the logistics and force design needs of the Indo-Pacific region but also highlighted the work of NPS students, such as U.S. Navy Lts. Jordan Whittle and Adam Summers. Their award-winning research on unmanned flotillas demonstrated the practical application of their studies.
During his stay, Paparo participated in a guest lecture attended by over 1,300 students and faculty. Here, he emphasized the Indo-Pacific’s significance, where nearly a third of global trade occurs, and highlighted the role of technology in future conflicts. The importance of artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, and space operations were focal points, aiming to provide a decision-making edge over adversaries.
Paparo applauded NPS for its strategic geographical location near Silicon Valley, considering it a vital asset in advancing defense innovations. He stressed the essential role of elite institutions like NPS in preparing leaders for the rapidly evolving defense landscape and urged continued collaboration with the private sector.
Questions from students touched on several challenges, including the discrepancy between the U.S. Department of Defense and the private sector in technological advancements. Paparo acknowledged the importance of military-industry partnerships and cited the strategic value of unmanned systems, emphasizing their expendability and potential for innovation.
Concluding his visit, Paparo stressed the importance of deterrence and the role of strength, readiness, and alliances in maintaining peace. His insights reinforced the essential contribution of NPS in fostering tech-savvy military leaders who can navigate the complex security challenges of the 21st century.
